Why should I learn the 10-finger system and is it worth it?
It is always worth learning touch typing regardless of age, even if you are already used to using your own “personal” system. You can benefit from the ten-finger system all your life and it is faster to learn than you think. Using the ten-finger system saves you constantly having to shift your gaze from screen to keyboard and back again. That saves time and allows you to see mistakes as they happen. You’ll see that when you try our typing game and use only two fingers.
How often and for how long should I practice?
Every person learns differently and at different speeds so it’s hard to make generalisations. But here are a few suggestions:
Divide your training time and practice daily once or twice in short blocks of around 15 to 30 minutes.
Repeat each lesson until you are typing fluently with only a few mistakes. When you’ve done that, move on to the next level lesson.
Try one of the more advanced lessons every now and again. It’s all about getting a feel for the keys. You’ll soon notice that at some point your fingers will move all by themselves without you having to think about it.
The scoring is very strict. Try to type slower and make less mistakes rather than rushing.
As soon as you have gained a basic command of the keyboard you should use only the 10-finger system when typing. Avoid switching back to your old system, even if you are in a hurry.
If you have donated to Tipp10, for a change you can play the typing game and complete the level corresponding to your lesson.
Tips for using the 10-finger system
Every person learns differently and at different speeds so it’s hard to make generalisations. But here are a few suggestions:
First place your fingers in the home position (this is displayed at the beginning of each lesson). The fingers return to the home row after each key is pressed.
Make sure your posture is straight and avoid looking at the keyboard. Your eyes should be directed toward the monitor at all times.
Bring your arms to the side of your body and relax your shoulders. Your upper arm and lower arm should be at a right angle. Do not rest your wrists and remain in an upright position.
Try to remain relaxed during the typing lessons.
Try to keep typing errors to a minimum. It is much less efficient to type fast if you are making a lot of mistakes.
